Natural Sleep Remedies for Insomnia

Alternative or Natural Sleep Remedies

Some insomniacs  or people with another sleep disorder use herbs such as valerian, chamomile, lavender, hops, and passion-flower. Valerian has undergone multiple studies and appears to be modestly effective. Cannabis indica has also been suggested as a very effective treatment for insomnia.

Alcohol may have sedative properties, but the REM sleep suppressing effects of the drug prevent restful, quality sleep. Middle-of-the-night awakenings due to polyuria or other effects from alcohol consumption are common, and hangovers can also lead to morning grogginess.

Insomnia may be a symptom of magnesium deficiency, or lower magnesium levels. A healthy diet containing magnesium, can help to improve sleep in individuals without an adequate intake of magnesium.

Pomegranates are also believed to help insomniacs sleep. Pomegranate juice is pasteurized so the raw pomegranate seeds would be best.  High in antioxidants too.

For another natural sleep remedy others report the use of a mixture of raw apple cider vinegar and raw honey but the evidence for this is only anecdotal. Raw apple cider vinegar is irritating to the stomach for  many people.  Others claim it helps them.  Mixing it with the alkaline honey would help change the acidic vinegar to a more tolerable solution, in pure, filtered water of course.  But if you do try this, only drink a little bit of it at first to test the digestive tract.  It can also be irritating to the esophagus.
